How might dietary scientists weigh in on this?Īnswer: Thousands of years ago, being able to store large quantities of energy-dense fuel in the form of adipose (fatty) tissue spelled survival when food was scarce, says Roger Highfield in "The Physics of Christmas: From the Aerodynamics of Reindeer to the Thermodynamics of Turkey." The history reminded me of the little book I read for my Christmas book the year before last – 4000 Years of Christmas, but this author emphasized different aspects of the many pre-Christian myths that have influenced the Christmas traditions. It was not at all limited to physics, but also took in the history, chemistry, and biology of various aspects of Christmas. It explored all sorts of (mostly British and American) traditions in great detail. Of course, some parts were more interesting than others. Stay tuned until next year, when we will be trying to read another 50 list books. This will also be my last list book for the year. This book is my Christmas read for this year.
